In November of 2011 RMRI LLC’s Rick Gurley teamed up with Pursuit Magazine to produce and promote a YouTube Video titled “Basic Use of Maltego for Network Intelligence Gathering”. 4 years and 72,000 views later, investigators are still using the screencast to improve their Cyber Investigation skills.
Maltego is an open source search technology that utilizes what is known as transforms to collect information from the Internet on a given topic. One can use Maltego to gather intelligence on a person, a phone number, an email address, and even a computer network. In the Cyber-Investigations world Maltego is an invaluable tool for discovering information on a wide range of subjects, including social networks, companies, and organizations, making it vital in criminal defense cases, civil litigation, and investigations involving businesses.
In this day and age open source intelligence has become key in private sector investigations. As this blog has stated earlier, we are in a digital age and a lot of the information produced in this digital age is now open source intelligence. Maltego is just one of many tools that is used to gather open source intelligence. Maltego is a tool that every investigator that is versed in Cyber-Investigations should have in their arsenal. Maltego Community Edition is free, easy to use, and very thorough at its job. Maltego also offers a paid version that is even more thorough at gathering open source intelligence.
