Approximately two (2) weeks ago I got this package in the mail. To my surprise and delight, I received a secret shopper assignment, complete with a $2,800.00 check! And a letter instructing me to by five (5) Walmart Gift Cards for $500.00 each and put $300.00 in my pocket! Things were shaping up, this just must be my lucky day! Don’t believe me? Right below this paragraph is a copy of the check!
By now the savvy consumers and the just average private investigators should be laughing. The compassionate consumers and private investigators that are now aware of what is going on are saying “I really hope he didn’t take that check to his bank and deposit it”.Well, I’d like to think that I am at least an average private investigator, and even if I’m not I’d like to think that I have enough common sense to know that if something seems to good to be true, it usually is. So, beware “secret shopper”!
This is an age old scam, and it still works. This scam combines a little intrigue, you are a SECRET SHOPPER, with what appears to be a reward, which is a good combination to gain an unsuspecting person’s confidence. What happens here is this type of check does in fact fool some banks and most people. You deposit the check, and your account is credited with the funds, while you rush out and send off the money or the merchandise or in this case front and back pictures of Walmart Gift Cards that you have been instructed to send off after you deposit the check, and keep your $300.00 fee.
What is actually happening here is that you just got a counterfeit check, and it will take your bank a few days to discover that the check is counterfeit, in that time it takes for the bank to discover that your check is a fraud, you will have sent off front and back pictures of the Walmart Gift Cards for the person that just sent you a fraudulent check to buy merchandise from Walmart with on-line. Once the check is discovered to be fraudulent by your bank, you will be held responsible for paying it back and the person that sent you the check will have profited from sending you a counterfeit check, with no responsibility whatsoever and no way for you to hold them accountable.
